Values-in-action

For the Values in Action (VIA) programme undertaken by the NPCC (Sea) Unit, we had adopted the ECON Medicare centre located at Tampines Street 11. It is a newly build medical and recreational centre, tending to the needs of the elderly which include befriending, gardening, games and housekeeping services. The 20 cadets from Secondary One and about eight cadets from Secondary Three were heavily involved in a total of six sessions of VIA, during which the Secondary Three CLs closely mentored the Secondary Ones.

The sessions comprised of the following activities - Brisk Walking at the butterfly garden and  gardening on 3 June 15, Art & Craft which comprised of crafting bookmarks and photo frames on 6 July 15, teaching elderly flower arrangement on 16 July 15 to celebrate a senior’s birthday, Hari Raya celebrations with food, traditional songs and dances on 20 July 15, housekeeping and gardening with close guidance from the Changkat Community Club Women’s activity group on 29 August 15. There are also plans to bring the elderly on a trip to Sentosa in late October to round up the year’s activities and close collaboration with the centre.

It has been a really joyful and meaningful VIA involvement, as the cadets shared a lot of team work and camaraderie, at the same time learnt a lot of useful life skills like perseverance and patience when working with the elderly. They were also in awe with the stories from the elderly, and picked up new knowledge and awareness about the community after listening to the elderly and their life experiences. The cadets also worked on their communication and soft skills like time management and coordination when they planned and executed their projects and activities. The reflection and debrief sessions held after every session helped the cadets revisit their blind spots and helped them move forward to consolidate their learning and work harder and better for their next project.

Overall, the cadets really enjoyed their journey in VIA and looked forward to more sessions in the near future. The organisation has also been very forthcoming and we are keen to continue the collaboration.
